NOTE: This article is part of a six-question series providing a structured process to Meet the business need for insight.
Spans and Layers analysis requires only a hierarchical dataset with people or positions linked through ID and Parent ID. Reporting Grade Distance analysis requires only the addition of a grade property.
Key questions for defining your key measures include:
- Are there any positions which should be excluded: PAs are often excluded from analysis as PA positions tend to be located at higher organizational layers, without executive level grades. (See What is the difference between Span and Outgoing Count?) to understand how these Orgvue generated properties operate differently when filters are applied
- What is the target managerial span of control and the target number of managerial layers, for the organization as a whole, and for different subgroups and manager populations (see Spans and Layers Targets Pack).
- What span categories should be defined and reported, for example, one-to one (1), micro teams (2-3), below target (4-7), on target (8-12) above target (13-16) Excessive (17+). As explained in the article, Best practices for organizational analysis, reporting the proportion of managers in each category is more insightful than reporting average spans of control.
