You may need to create or remove nodes (e.g. people or positions) when you are editing data in Orgvue. This article explains how nodes can be added, cloned and deleted. A related article explains how to edit property values for nodes.
Note:
- Creating, cloning and removing requires user permissions which are managed by your company's Orgvue Administrator and Dataset Owners.
- Your use-case determines whether you should delete nodes from your dataset. For example, you should not delete in a modelling exercise as it will prevent you from tracking the impact of closing a position.
The examples shown here show nodes being created, deleted and cloned using the Action Toolbar. The icons on the bottom right corner of the canvas can also be used to trigger these actions.
Create a node
The easiest way to create a new node is through the toolbar when you click on the intended parent (manager) node. From there you can immediately confirm the correct position of your new node in the hierarchy. Your new node will have blank data for all properties except for the ID property and the Parent ID property when the "Child of" hierarchy option is selected.
- Select the manager of the node being created
- Select 'Create Node' on the toolbar
- Enter the critical data in the 'Create' pop-up window
- Click 'Create'
Clone a node
You may wish to clone an existing node if you need to create multiple nodes that share many data attributes with an existing node. Cloning is an effective method of creating many similar positions, requiring less manual effort compared to creating multiple nodes one at a time. When you clone, all data attributes are copied over into your clones, except the ID. Properties can be excluded for values to be left blank when cloned; a step-by-step guide is provided in a separate article, Duplicate existing positions by 'Cloning'.
- Select the existing node you want to clone
- Click on 'Clone Node' in the toolbar
- Specify the number of clones for the node
- Select 'Clone'
Note: if you are using an Org Modelling solution with 'As-Is' and 'To-Be' properties, nodes in the baseline should not be cloned: Depending on your setup, the As-Is data may also be cloned which will compromise your baseline. Please discuss the specifics of your setup with your Orgvue representative.
Delete a node
When you are cleaning your dataset you might want to delete records.
- Select the node to delete
- Click on 'Delete Node' in the toolbar
- Specify what should happen to the descendants of the node
- Select 'Delete'
