This article explains the different ways property values can be edited. A related article explains how to add and delete nodes.
The approaches for editing property values are listed below. An overview of each approach is provided in the following sections.
- Dragging-and-dropping nodes
- Dragging-and-dropping with the Color Legend
- Dragging-and-dropping with the Filter Control
- Entering values in a Worksheet
- Editing with the Action Toolbar
- Editing with the Data Pane
- Paste Merging
Editing values is a common action when:
- Data Cleaning: Fixing broken hierarchies, replacing missing values, and updating incorrect values;
- Organization Modelling: Specifying positions in the ‘to-be’ organization, for example to define the function, geographic location, grade and cost of positions.
When Data is being edited, it is almost always beneficial to save your changes in a Draft.
- Your underlying dataset will remain intact.
- A detailed record of all changes will be maintained in the Changes List (not just changes since the last save).
- You can revert any changes made since the Draft was created (not just changes since the last save).
- You can avoid repeatedly fixing the same data quality issues if datasets are refreshed before being fixed at source (corrections saved in the Draft can be applied to the refreshed dataset).
- You can model and compare different org design scenarios from the same baseline dataset.
Editing data requires user permissions which are managed by your company's Orgvue Administrator and Dataset Owners.
Dragging-and-dropping nodes in the org structure
You can drag-and-drop nodes in a Tree or Worksheet slide to update reporting lines. When a node is moved, its Parent ID property value updates.
- Select the position you want to move; drag and drop to its new manager.
- In the ‘Set Hierarchy’ window, select 'Preserve children' if team members of the selected position are to be included in the move. (The Orgvue User Guide explains other options for Descendants). Select ‘Apply’.
- The position is now moved to the new team; the Manager ID property value is updated.
Drag-and-drop multiple nodes by holding down the keyboard Shift key whilst selecting nodes.
See Moving nodes in the structure for more information.
Dragging-and-dropping with the Color Legend
The Color Legend can be used to update individual nodes or to bulk edit multiple nodes.
Drag-and-drop values displayed in the legend
In the example below, six positions in New York are being relocated to Philadelphia.
- Select the ‘Color by’ icon, and select the required property (‘Location’ in this example).
- Select the ‘Legend’ icon to display the legend.
- Drag the value to be updated to its required value 'New York' to 'Philadelphia' in this example.
- Select ‘Apply’ after reviewing the ‘Set Property value’ information: the number of nodes which will be edited, the label of each node, the name of the property which will be edited and the value which will be applied.
TIP: You can Filter with the color legend to see the positions which are included in each Legend category.
Drag nodes to the legend
- Drag a position in the structure to the required value shown in the legend (in the above example, a position in New York is relocating to Philadelphia).
- Select ‘Apply’ after reviewing the ‘Set Property value’ information: the number of nodes which will be edited, the label of each node, the name of the property which will be edited and the value which will be applied.
Dragging-and-dropping with the Filter Control
The Filter Control can be used to bulk edit multiple nodes.
- Using a single property; and
- Using multiple properties, enabling defined subgroups of nodes to be edited
Using the Filter Control with a single property
Using the same example as above, six positions in New York are being relocated to Philadelphia.
- Select the ‘Filtering’ icon.
- Select the property you require in the Filter Control.
- Drag the value to be updated onto the required value.
This triggers the ‘Set Property value’ window to review and apply the edit. This is shown at point 4, above in the Color Legend example.
TIP: You can create a new value by dropping onto the property name displayed in the Filter Control (‘Location’ in this example).
Using the Filter Control to edit nodes in a subgroup
In the example below, the two ExCo positions in Philadelphia are planned to relocate to London.
- Select ‘Filtering’.
- Select the properties which define the sub-group to be edited (in this example, ‘Location’ and ‘Function’).
- Select the values which define the sub-group to be edited (in this example, ‘Philadelphia’ and ‘Exco’).
- Drag the subgroup to be edited to the required value (in this example, ‘London’).
This triggers the ‘Set Property value’ window to review and apply the edit. This is shown at point 4, above in the Color Legend example.
Editing with the Action Toolbar
When using a Summary Tree Slide or a Worksheet Slide, individual or multiple nodes can be edited using the Action toolbar.
- Using a Summary Tree Slide, properties shown on the card can be edited (you can see how to add properties to cards in, How to create an organization chart).
- Using a Worksheet Slide, properties included as columns can be edited.
- Select the nodes to be edited.
- Select the ‘Edit Nodes’ icon from the action toolbar.
- Enter required values.
- Select ‘Apply’.
Editing with the Data Pane
Any dataset property can be edited using the Data Pane. This is in contrast to the Action Toolbar (above) which limits editing to properties which are included on Tree slide cards or Worksheet columns.
The Data Pane can be used with any slide type.
- Using Tree slides and Worksheet slides, individual nodes or multiple nodes can be selected for editing.
- Using other slide types, any grouping of nodes can be selected to edit the nodes included in the group. Examples of groups include:
- Bars or columns in a Chart slide; and
- Cells in a Boxgrid or Crosstab slide.
- Select the ‘Data’ Tab.
-
Select a node or multiple nodes to be edited.
- As nodes are selected, they are listed in the data panel, labelled ‘a’ above. Nodes can also be dragged and dropped here.
-
Double-click the value for the property to be edited; enter the new value; and press enter.
- If the property to be edited is displayed on the slide, it will be listed under ‘Slide properties';
- If the property to be edited is not displayed on the slide, but has been added to the data pane, it will be listed under ‘Other properties’;
- If the property to be edited is not listed, you can add is to the data pane by selecting the ‘+’ icon.
More information on using the Data Pane is provided in a separate article and comprehensive information is provided in the Orgvue User Guide.
Entering values in a Worksheet
You can update values in Worksheet slide similar to Excel.
- Double click on the cell to be updated.
- Enter the new value. Press enter or click elsewhere to update the cell. The cell is flagged green to indicate it's updated.
The Orgvue User Guide shows additional Worksheet functionality:
- Dragging to fill cells;
- Selecting multiple cells and apply the same updated value;
- Navigating between cells using keyboard arrow keys;
- Using keyboard shortcut keys.
Paste Merging
Paste Merge can be used to update Orgvue datasets using data in a spreadsheet format (e.g. Excel and Google Sheets). See, Updating property values by paste merging data from a spreadsheet.
