This article shows how to change reporting lines by dragging and dropping positions in the organization structure.
This is a common action when:
- Data Cleaning: Correcting reporting lines and fixing broken hierarchies so the organization structure is complete and rolled-up measures are calculated accurately.
- Organization Modelling: Moving positions and teams to restructure the organization.
Note: Editing data requires user permissions which are managed by your company's Orgvue Administrator and Dataset Owners.
Key points
- Dragging-and-dropping updates the Parent ID property value.
- Generated Properties and ‘rolled-up’ measures automatically update to take account of structural changes.
- By default, when a manager position is moved, their reporting line is preserved (reports move with the position). Other options can be selected.
- By default, the moved position becomes a direct report of the position it is moved to. Other options can be selected.
- You can drag and drop a single position, or select multiple positions to be moved simultaneously.
Dragging and dropping positions in the structure
The example shows the Chief Product Officer (CPO) moving from the CEO’s direct reporting line to the Chief Technology Officer’s (CTO).
The starting point is shown below:
- The CPO and the CTO have the same value for the ‘Position Manager ID’ property: 50. This is the ‘Position ID’ value for the CEO.
- Rolled-up measures are included on the cards (see How to create an organization chart, and Display ‘rolled-up’ measures on tree slides).
- Drag the position to be moved to the position it will report to. In this example, the Chief Product Officer is dragged to, and dropped on, the Chief Technology Officer position.
- Review the ‘Set Hierarchy’ information:
- The position being moved.
- How it will be related to the position it was moved to.
- The position it was moved to.
- How 'Descendants' (positions in the the reporting line of the position being moved) will move. In this example, ‘preserve children’ is selected; the Chief Product Officer’s reports will accompany the move).
- Select ‘Apply’.
As the Chief Product Officer is now at level 3, it will not be shown on the canvas when only two visible levels are displayed. In the following illustration, the slide has been focussed by the Chief Technology Officer and continues to show 2 levels. Alternatively, the number of visible levels can be expanded.
- The ‘Position Manager ID’ value for the CPO has updated to ‘6’ (the position ID of the Chief Technology Officer).
- Rolled-up measures for the CTO have updated, taking the inclusion of the CPO’s reporting line into account.
You can select multiple positions to be moved simultaneously by holding down the keyboard shift key.
Note:
- You can also drag and drop positions in a Worksheet slide.
- Because you are making data changes (updating the Position Manager ID for moved positions), these need to be saved. It’s usually beneficial to save your changes in a Draft .
- It is likely that additional property values (beyond Position Manager ID for moved positions will need to be updated), for example, if the position’s geographic location, or functional department is changing. The required property values will need to be edited separately.
