This article provides a step-by-step guide to create a bar chart with average values displayed for subgroups. In this example, the average salary is shown for each grade band.
The explanation assumes you know how to add a slide and specify the Chart slide type (see Analyze and visualize organization subgroups with Charts).
- In the 'Group By' option, select the property which defines your required subgroups. In this example, ‘Grade’ is selected
- Specify how values are to be calculated. In this example, the average ‘Actual Salary’ is used
- Click in the ‘Value’ field
- Select the ‘>’ icon for your required property
- Select the calculation required. In this example., ‘AVG’ for average is selected. A list of the other calculations is provided at the end of this article.
By default, bars are presented in ascending numeric order as shown below. The order of the bars can be reversed so the bars are presented in descending order to reflect senior grade levels with higher numbers.
- Select the cog icon for the ‘Group By’ options
- Select “By Bucket reversed” as the Sort option
Note:
At step 2a, above, ‘AVG’ was selected to display the average of all property values, other options may be required depending on the analysis being conducted. The options are:
- CNTD (Count Distinct): the number of distinct (unique) property values
- SUM: the total of all values when a number property has been selected
- MIN: the lowest value when a number property has been selected
- MAX: the highest value when a number property has been selected
- RNG (Range) the difference between the MIN value and the Max value
- CNT (Count): the number of nodes with non-blank property values
A separate article explains how users with dataset edit permission can change the format of displayed number values, including the number of decimal places shown.
