Pack description
The Spans & Layers Story Pack provides insight to analyse structural effectiveness and efficiency across Key Organization Dimensions:
- Functional departments
- Geographic locations
- Business units
- Grade levels
To identify where the organization structure deviates from your specified targets, the Spans & Layers Targets Pack is recommended.
Dataset requirements
To gain the expected insight, your dataset should include at least one functional, geographic, business unit or grade property.
Insight provided
With this pack you can address questions such as:
- What is the split of people managers and non-managers across the organization?
- What is the average span of control across the organization as a whole?
- For each leader’s full reporting line
- For each individual people manager
- How many layers does the organization extend to?
- How many positions are there at each layer of the organization
- In which leadership reporting lines are there extended hierarchical layers?
- Are there opportunities for efficiency gains through the consolidation of small teams?
- How many one-to-one reporting relationships and micro teams are there across the organization
- Where are these in the structure?
- Which managers have narrow spans of control?
- Is there a need to rebalance people management responsibilities?
- How many managers have excessively high spans of control?
- Where are these in the structure?
- Which managers have excessively broad spans of control?
- What is the average span of control at each layer of the organization?

Spans and Layers Story Pack: Slide-by-Slide provides a detailed overview of the content provided in the pack.
Template packs are provided to get your analysis started: you can change existing slides and create additional slides to customize your analysis.
How to access and configure the pack
- In Workspace, select the dataset you want to use (if necessary, see Accessing Datasets and Packs).
- Select ‘New pack’ then ‘Next’.
- Select ‘Analyze the size, cost, composition and structure of the organization’ under “What do you want to do?”. Select the ‘Spans and Layers Story Pack icon. Select Next.
- If dataset property mapping is complete you will have the option to select ‘Open’.
- If dataset property mapping is not complete, and if you have dataset edit rights, you will have the option to select ‘Next’.
If necessary, you can change previously mapped properties. For more information, see Property Mapping in Template Packs.
When ‘Next’ is selected.
- Specify which properties in your dataset which correspond to functional departments, geographic locations, business units and grade levels. These will be used for subgroup reporting. You do not need to map all four properties. The recommended actions for unmapped properties are outlined at the end of this guide.
- Select ‘Open’.
- When the pack opens you will be prompted to define two categories used in the pack. Customizing these categories is optional. You can skip this step and open the pack with default categories by selecting ‘OK’. You also have the option of completing or changing the Pack Configuration after you have opened the pack (see Configure template pack content).
- Span of Control categories group cases according to their span of control.
- Executive Level defines the lowest layer in the structure at which positions are considered to be ‘Executive’.
The example below shows these being reported in the pack.
To configure the Span of Control Categories
- Select the arrow.
- Specify your category labels in the fields under the 'Span Category' heading.
- Specify a value for each category in the fields under the 'Upper Threshold' heading. This value represents the highest span of control with which a manager will be included in the category).
- Specify an extreme value as the upper threshold for the final 'Greater than' category. This will ensure all cases are included.
To customize the Executive Level
- Select the ‘Optional’ tab.
- Select the arrow shown below.
- Specify the lowest layer in the structure at which positions are considered ‘executive’.
- Select 'OK' to open the pack.
If there are dimensions which have not been mapped, we recommend the following actions which can be taken when the pack is open:
- Removing the standard slides relating to these dimensions (see Remove slides you don’t need)
- Removing properties from cards which reference these dimensions (see Remove properties from cards)
- Removing the unmapped properties from slide paging options (see Specify which properties are used for Paging)
