Pack description
The Spans & Layers Intro Pack provides insight to analyse structural effectiveness and efficiency.
This pack provides the fastest route to insight because there is no need to map dataset properties for sub-group reporting, or specify targets. An overview of the pack content is provided in Spans and Layers Intro Pack: Slide-by-Slide.
Two additional Spans & Layers packs provide enhanced insight:
- The Spans & Layers Story Pack enables comparisons across organizational subgroups (e.g., across functional departments, geographic locations, and/ or business units).
- Spans & Layers Targets Pack enables comparisons across organizational subgroups, and identifies where the organization structure deviates from your specified targets.
Dataset requirements
The pack can be opened with any People or Positions dataset. No specific properties are required.
Insight provided
With this pack you can address questions such as:
- What is the split of people managers and non-managers across the organization?
- What is the average span of control across the organization as a whole?
- For each leader’s full reporting line
- For each individual people manager
- How many layers does the organization extend to?
- How many positions are there at each layer of the organization
- In which leadership reporting lines are there extended hierarchical layers?
- Are there opportunities for efficiency gains through the consolidation of small teams?
- How many one-to-one reporting relationships and micro teams are there across the organization
- Where are these in the structure?
- Which managers have narrow spans of control?
- Is there a need to rebalance people management responsibilities?
- How many managers have excessively high spans of control?
- Where are these in the structure?
- Which managers have excessively broad spans of control?

You also have the option of completing or changing the Pack Configuration after you have opened the pack (see Configure template pack content).
- Span of Control categories group cases according to their span of control.
- Executive Level defines the lowest layer in the structure at which positions are considered to be ‘Executive’.
The example below shows these being reported in the pack.
To customize Span of Control Categories:
- Select the arrow shown below.
- Specify your category labels in the fields under the 'Span Category' heading.
- Specify a value for each category in the fields under the 'Upper Threshold' heading. This value represents the highest span of control with which a manager will be included in the category).
