This article explains how to exclude orphans and sub-trees which are disconnected from the reporting structure from your analysis using the filter control. Using The Hierarchy Cleaning Pack is recommended to establish a single hierarchy, and the approach described here should be used with caution for example, when you need to Break out of the data quality trap.
Visualizing and analysing the organization structure is a key benefit of Orgvue. For example, you can:
- Produce an organization chart (see How to create an organization chart)
- Visualize the organization landscape (See Visualize the organization landscape with tree slides)
- Display ‘rolled-up’ values on tree slides
The completeness and accuracy of your outputs depends on having a single structure with every node* (a person or a position) connected through managerial reporting lines. However, data quality issues can result in disconnected nodes:

To remove nodes which are disconnected from the reporting structure
- Select the ‘Filtering’ icon to open the filter control
- Select ‘Level 1’ as the property to filter by
- Select the Level 1 leader/ leadership position for the required reporting structure
- In the example below, Reece Harris is the CEO, the number of positions reporting to the CEO can be seen in the filter control
- Select ‘X’ to minimize the filter control
The slide now only displays nodes which report through the structure to the CEO, and the active filter is shown on the canvas:
*This article has deliberately sought to exclude technical terms, an explanation of ‘nodes’ can be found in the article How to get from raw data to actionable insight. To go further, see Hierarchical tree terminology explained.
