Visualize the organization landscape with tree slides

Creating an organization chart is a classic use for tree slides. Typically, the ‘Aligned Tree’ slide type is used.  This is shown in the article How to create an Organization Chart.

You can do a lot more with tree slides.  A key benefit is the ability to visualize the organization landscape:  Seeing every position in the organization structure, color-coded by a chosen property so that patterns, anomalies, and exceptions can identified rapidly and communicated in compelling way.

In the example below, the Icicle shows every position color-coded by the gender of the incumbent.  We can immediately see a lack of gender diversity at the more senior layers of the organization.



In following example, we will explain how to add an Icicle to produce the visualization shown above:

Add a Tree slide to your pack
Alternatively, copy and paste an existing tree slide by right clicking the slide in the left-hand slide sorter)

1. Select theicon from the slide sorter
2. Select ‘Tree’ as the slide type

Specify the Icicle Graph Type and show all org layers

1. Select ‘Icicle’ from the list of Graph Types in the right-hand Slide pane
2. Set the number of visible levels to the maximum 

 

Specify the property to color by and choose the color palette

1. Select the color palette
2. Select ‘Property’ to ‘Color by’ (Gender in this example)
3. Select your required property from the drop-down menu
4. Select your preferred color palette

Select the Legend

1. Select the Legend so this is shown on the slide

Specify additional properties to be included on cards

1. Select ‘Add property’ from the right-hand slide pane
2. Select the properties to be show on cards
3. Selected properties are listed in the slide pane, and presented on cards for each position in the structure (these can be reordered by dragging and dropping the properties in the slide pane list)

As alternatives Icicles, Sunbursts and Tree Maps are often used to visualize the organization landscape.  These can be selected at the stage (see above) when the Icicle was selected.  With any of these alternatives, you can Focus slide content on a subgroup of the organization structure.
