This article explains the different options for analysing and visualizing Hierarchical Data with Tree slides.
Typical requirements are:
- To produce an organization chart (see How to create an organization chart);
- To visualize the organization landscape (See Visualize the organization landscape with tree slides).
Three main options determine how information is presented on a Tree slide:
- The Graph Type which is selected;
- The Card Type which is selected;
- Additional properties which are specified.
These are specified in the Slide Pane. The illustration below also shows a Tree slide being added to a pack.
Graph Types
The Graph Type determines how the tree is shown graphically. Four commonly used Graph Types are illustrated below, with further options explained in the Orgvue User Guide.
Aligned Tree
Icicle
Tree Map
Sunburst
Card Types
The Card Type determines the information presented for each node. The three options - "Node", "Summary" and "Scaled" - are shown below with an 'Aligned Tree".
"Node" Card Type
The "Node" Card Type is the default option when a Tree slide is added. Only the node title (label) is presented. The property used as the node title can be specified by selecting the icon shown below (a).
"Summary" Card Type
More information can be included with the "Summary" Card Type: A sub-title, and additional properties can be selected.
Use the icons shown to:
- Select the title property
- Select the sub-title property (optional)
- Select additional properties (optional)
- Change the order of additional properties by dragging and dropping
- Remove additional properties
In addition to property values for individual nodes, rolled-up measures can be added to cards to show data aggregated for each manager's team, by leadership reporting line and for the whole organization.
Note: The "Summary" Card Type can be used with other Graph Types, for example "Icicles", "Sunbursts" and "Tree Maps" shown above. The card is shown when the cursor is placed over a node.
"Scaled" Card Type
With the "Scaled" card type, each node is sized according to the value of a chosen property. Typically, “rolled-up” measures are used, for example, Total FTE or Total Cost to show the relative size and cost of reporting lines and teams.
