When you create a new pack then you are likely to see the entire organization or at least the subset to which you have access.
This articles shows you the different ways to navigate the specific data that you wish to view.
There are three key ways so do this:
- Filtering - Using the filter control to select combinations of specific values within one or more properties to see the right nodes. Examples - you may want to exclude orphan nodes, so add the is_orphan property to your filter and select No.
- Paging - Using paging allows you to add one or more properties to your canvas to make it easy to scroll through the results. Examples - you want to see the size and shape of different Functions within your organization so you would Page by the function property. Alternatively, you may want to see a tree view for each of the direct reports to the CEO. In this case you would add the Level_2 property to the canvas.
- Focus - Applying focus removes other nodes from view so you only see the node or nodes that you have selected, plus their direct reports. Examples - Great when you are in a working session and you quickly want to drill into a specific part of the hierarchy. Also when you are moving nodes between two parts of an organization then too many nodes can complicate things. Focussing on the two parent nodes makes it easier to re-parent the positions.
TOP TIP: It is often best to use these in combination to get the best result, especially filtering and paging
Information on how to use Filtering and Paging can be found here:
Useful generated properties for filtering and paging
Level_2. Level 3....
Level_ properties return the names or position titles of the people sitting at that level within the organization. Typically Level_1 would just be the CEO and therefore Level_2 would be the CEO's direct reports. Once you understand how these work then they can be useful filtering and paging or combinations of both. For example you may want to apply a filter at Level_2 and then page by Level_3. This would allow you to quickly drill into the direct reports of the selected person at Level_2.
is_Orphan
Whilst we all want to have a perfectly clean organization, there are often times where positions fall outside the hierarchy. Setting the filter to is_Orphan equals No quickly filters out those nodes.
Depth
Depth is a property that calculates how many layers down the in the organization a position is. So the CEO typlically has a Depth of 1 and their direct reports have a Depth of 2 etc. Filtering to a Depth of 1 will provide a list that will include the CEO plus anyone else that is not supposed to be there.
