When there are a lot of positions in the structure it can be difficult to see the information you need.
Too much detail gets in the way.
This article explains how to focus the content of your slide. You can:
- Set a Filter so your visualization is based on a subset of cases
- Set Pages to present subgroups separately
- Specify the number of Levels (org layers) displayed
- Focus by a selected position
Filter to show only specified subgroups
Set a filter to see data for only part of the organization, for example a specific function. In the example below, we will show the organization chart only for the People function
- Select the Filter Icon
- Select (checkmark) the property which includes the subgroup you want to include
- Select the value or multiple values to define the cases which are included
- Click ‘X’ to minimize the filter control
Filters which are applied are shown on the canvas (see below).
Select ‘X’ if you want to remove the filter.
Set Pages to present subgroups separately
With paging, you can present subgroups of the organization split over separate pages. This can be a great way to structure a pack of organization charts. The example uses Function to page by, so that the chart for each function is presented on a separate page.
- Select the Paging icon
- Select with a checkmark the property to page by
- Paging options are shown on the canvas
- Click on the paging options
- Select the subgroup you want to display
Alternatively, scroll forward and back through the pages using the “>” and “<” icons
TOP TIPS:
- It is often beneficial to use filtering and paging in combination
- You can add multiple paging properties to “slice-and-dice” your visualization
- The Orgvue calculated property “Level_2” is often used for paging as this provides sub-groups based on the direct reports to the most senior position in your dataset. (Further levels are also automatically calculated and may be appropriate depending on your organization’s structure)
- You can copy your filtering and paging from one slide and paste it to another: Right click the slide in the left-hand slide sorter, and select Filtering or Paging
Specify the number of Levels (org layers) shown
Specifying the number of visible levels (Org layers) can help navigate your slide content. This is shown below, with an example showing the number of levels being changed from 7 to 2
The number of layers shown extends from and includes the highest-level position, or from a position which has been selected to Focus the view (see section below).
Focus by a selected position
In the illustration above, two layers are presented. No filtering or paging is applied so the highest-level position is the CEO. Any position in the structure can be set as the highest position shown in the tree:
- Right-click on a position in the structure
- Select ‘Focus’
This position is now set as the highest position on the chart. The number of levels shown will be calculated from and including the selected position.
To reset the focus, either:
- Right-click the position and select ‘Clear focus’, or
- Select ‘X’ from the bottom menu shown below
When the subgroups you need cannot be identified using property values, you can create and apply Pinboard Collections.
