This article explains how to assign Dataset Permissions to User Groups.
Access to data is provided to User Groups on a dataset-by-dataset basis: Until a User Group is assigned Permission, only Admins and the Dataset Owner can access a dataset.
The illustration below shows the different levels of Dataset Permission which can be granted.
Examples of metadata edits (‘Modify’ permission level) include changing the name of a dataset and changing the dataset type.
How to assign Dataset Permissions
In the following example, there are eight Users and three User Groups: ‘HRBP’; ‘Finance’ and ‘Planning’. Note that users can be in more than one User Group.
- In the Settings application, select the ‘File’ menu to see a list of datasets.
- Select the name of the dataset to have permissions granted.
- In the ‘Edit Metadata’ page, scroll down to see ‘Dataset Permissions’.
- Enter the User Group in the field for the level of permission to be granted (the permission levels are explanation below).
NOTE: User Group labels are case sensitive. The entries in the Dataset Permission field need to exactly match the User Group name. Avoid differentiating User Groups based on capitalizations (e.g., two user groups named ‘HRBP’ and ‘hrbp’).
- Select Save
By Applying property permissions, Dataset Permissions can be further restricted. For example, individual properties can be hidden from a User Group which has been granted dataset permissions, and editing values for a specific property can be restricted when permission to ‘Update’ the dataset has been assigned.
Note: Users can can create their own packs with the data they have access to, but will not be able to see any packs created by others until Pack Permissions have been granted. See Sharing Packs.
