This article explains how to load your own dataset from Excel or CSV using Settings.
File requirements
- Column headings must be unique (these get applied as Orgvue Property Keys)
- Empty rows or columns must be removed
- Column headings must not contain special characters e.g., (!@#$
- Values must not include symbols. These are most commonly found in cost properties containing currency symbols. (e.g., $, £, €). Values can be formatted after the dataset is uploaded.
- Dates in CSV files must use ISO format: YYYY-MM-DD. (Dates in XLSX files can have any format)
- For hierarchical analysis:
- A column (property) to hold the unique ID for each node (e.g., ‘Employee URN’)
- A column (property) to hold each node’s parent ID (e.g., ‘Manager URN’)
- Nodes with missing ID or Parent ID values will be uploaded as broken hierarchies to be fixed in Orgvue
Also note:
- Leading 0's in IDs should be avoided.
- Hidden columns can be included or excluded. See Step 4, below.
- Calculated values will be brought into the dataset as hardcoded values.
Add a new dataset
- Navigate to Settings by selecting the burger icon.
- Select ‘Settings’.
- Select the ‘+ Dataset’ icon.
- In the example below, there are two existing datasets in the tenant. When there no available datasets, the highlighted notice is shown:
- Select the data to be uploaded by:
- Left clicking in the upload area, then selecting your file; or
- Placing the cursor in the upload area, then pasting your copied data;
- Dragging your file to the upload area.
Note: Hidden columns are included when a file is selected (a) or dragged (c) but excluded when data is copied and pasted (b).
Tip: If your source file is password protected, use the paste option (4b)
- Select ‘Next.
- Edit dataset details:
- Enter a name for the dataset and select which worksheet from the spreadsheet is to be uploaded
- Specify the Dataset Type (typically People or Positions);
- ‘Hierarchical’ is required to analyse the organization structure;
- Select the ID property for each node (e.g. employees or positions);
- Select the Node Parent ID property. This is used to define reporting lines and visualize the organization structure;
- Specify the property used as the default label for people or positions (typically employee name or position title);
- At this stage, access permissions can also be set (see Assigning dataset permissions).
- Select ‘Next’.
- Check Orgvue has detected and applied the correct ‘type’ for your properties
TIPs:
- IDs and Grades will often be detected as ‘Number’ properties. We recommend changing the type to ‘Text’ so these are displayed most appropriately in Workspace.
- Check that properties with numeric values have the ‘Number’ type applied. If they are detected as text properties, this is most likely due to symbols being included in the formatting of your source data. The fastest way to resolve this is by removing any formatting from your spreadsheet and reloading. (For more information, see: Why is my cost data not showing correctly?)
- Select ‘Upload’.
- Review the high-level information
- Select ‘Back to Datasets’
Your dataset is now available in your tenant:
Tips for next steps after uploading:
- Apply the required format to your property values. For example, where currency symbols have been removed to meet file upload requirements.
- Review and clean your data to avoid The impact of common data quality issues.
